Hall, William Laurence, Jr. Born April 16, 1941, to William and Elizabeth Hall in Berwyn, Illinois. Died August 4, 2024, in Edina, MN due to complications from Alzheimer's. Bill grew up in the Kenwood area of Minneapolis and attended West High School, the University of Arizona, Tucson and graduated from Northern Arizona University, Flagstaff, Arizona with graduate study at California State University, Northridge. In 1963 Bill married his U of A college sweetheart Sally McMullin. After working in California for several years, Bill and Sally moved to Edina, MN where Bill joined W. L. Hall Company which was founded by his father in 1948. He served as President and CEO of the company from 1978 to 2006 when his two sons, Craig and Brent, took over the business. Bill was a leader in the Minneapolis construction industry particularly in the world of architecture. He served on the board of directors of the University of Minnesota School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture and worked diligently raising money to construct the College of Design's new building. In recognition of Bill's efforts on behalf of the architectural community he received the AIA Minnesota Distinguished Service award and in 2000 was inducted into the national American Institute of Architects as an honorary member. Under Bill's leadership, the W. L. Hall Company provided the seed money for the development of a workshop at the School of Architecture. The W. L. Hall Workshop provides College of Design students a safe and collaborative environment to learn how to work with different materials and tools. Bill was an avid blood donor from the time he turned 18, donating over 60 gallons of blood products in his lifetime. In 2000 he was honored by Memorial Blood Center by his induction into the National Whole Blood Hall of Fame and an award named in his honor. During his working years Bill also served as President of the Minneapolis Builders Exchange and on the board of directors of Big Brothers & Big Sisters and Daystar University in Nairobi, Kenya as well as on the board of directors of The Minikahda Club where he is best remembered for his humorous roasts of the new members at the spring Good Fellowship luncheons for 19 years. In 1966 Bill and Sally joined Christ Presbyterian Church where Bill served as an Elder and chaired two building campaigns. Bill was a naturally gifted athlete, at one time a nationally ranked amateur racketball player who won 23 tournaments in a row the year he turned 35. While fiercely competitive in racquetball and on the golf course, he was a devoted family man, and his kind and sunny disposition won him multiple Husband of the Year, Father of the Year, and Grandfather of the Year awards (all from family). After his retirement Bill and Sally moved to Naples, Florida where they had maintained a winter get away for many years. Bill continued to be active in his community serving on the board of directors of Habitat for Humanity, Champions for Learning and Royal Poinciana Golf Club. He particularly enjoyed mentoring three students in the Take Stock in Children program and in 2014 was named Collier County Mentor of the Year. He and Sally became members of the Naples United Church of Christ where Bill chaired the Stewardship Committee for ten years. Bill was proceeded in death by his wife, Sally Hall. He is survived by children Craig (Rena) Hall of Excelsior, MN, Brent (Sarah) Hall of Edina, MN, Kristen Hall of Eden Prairie, MN, Kathy (Matt) Boente of San Francisco, CA, sisters Carolyn (James) Garven and Debbie Blake, brother-in-law Dick McMullin of Bergen, Norway, nieces Lise McMullin (Liv Solveig), Stephanie (Bill) Howard, Cyndi Garven, grandchildren Jack, Paige, Kate, Ned, Libby, Alyssa, Matthew, Tyler, Brien, and other extended family. The Hall Family would like to thank the entire staff of The Waters of Edina for the compassionate care they provided Bill during his three plus years there, and Grace Hospice for their loving care at the end of his life. A joint Celebration of Life service will be held for both Bill and Sally who died in November of 2020 at the height of COVID. Services will be held on Tuesday, August 13th at 2pm at Meetinghouse Church (formerly Colonial Church) at 6200 Colonial Way, Edina, MN 55436. Visitation to follow the service.
