Robert Alan Mingo

Mingo, Robert Alan 61, of Fridley passed away Sunday, February 26 from complications of FSH Muscular Dystrophy. Robert was born to Donald and Barbara (Smith) Mingo, in North Minneapolis. Robert was daring, mischievous, and funny, loving to entertain and make people laugh. He loved nature, animals, fishing, campfires (the bigger, the better), and people. He wrote hundreds of poems and published a book of poetry hoping to encourage his readers. Robert's love of animals led him to pursue a career as a Veterinary Technician, working at the Humane Society as well as Brooklyn Pet Hospital before his career plans were thwarted by health issues. Robert loved Jesus and outreach. His faith led him to see the image of God in all humanity. He was the first to step up and serve in times of need. He was a faithful volunteer for the local MDA, often seen sharing his story during Telethon time and was honored to be the state recipient of the national MDA Robert Ross Personal Achievement Award in 2009. He handed out water after the North Minneapolis Tornado which led to a water ministry in his neighborhood. For his outstanding contributions to the tornado relief effort, Robert won the MN State Council on Disability's Emergency Preparedness Award in 2011. He was a member of Sanctuary Covenant Church and served as an usher and anywhere needed. Robert was diagnosed with FSH Muscular Dystrophy in February of 2002, just 6 months after marrying his bride Amy (Nelson). Together they weathered the storms and challenges of this disease, learning to be flexible in finding new normals including the difficulty of asking for help. Thankfully they have a community of support. Robert is survived by Amy as well as his 5 siblings Don (Kathy) Mingo, Barry (Sharon) Mingo, Kristi Nelson, Karri (Mike) Zallar, and Kelli (Dan) Harty as well as several nieces and nephews. Preceding Robert in death are his parents Donald Mingo, Barbara (Smith) Lindsholm and Harry Lindsholm and his brother-inlaw Tim Nelson. Per Robert's wishes, a private family burial will be held this week with a public celebration of life service to be held Saturday, July 15th from 11am to 2pm at River Park North, 101 83rd Ave. North, Brooklyn Park, MN.
