Foss Richard David Foss Born April 29, 1934 - Died June 30, 2004 Preceded in death by wonderful parents, Myrthle Othelia Peterson Foss and Albert William Foss Sr.; big brother, Bill and "Gentle Giant" father-in-law, Elmer Wilbur Koenig and mother-in-law, Verna Moritz Koenig. Survived by devoted wife, Marlys Koenig Foss; beloved children, Nola and Diane; son- in-law, Charles (Skip) Engstrom, and super- magnificent grandchildren, Alex, Dana and Christian Richard Engstrom. Richard was born and raised in South Minneapolis, close by Lake Nokomis. Supported by hard-working and loving parents, he was free to fully explore and test his environment. His childhood was magical and idyllic and full of entrepreneurial experiences. He was a graduate of Roosevelt High School and the University of Minnesota. Richard spent his working life in public service. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War era. He served 32 years as an employee of the State of Minnesota, working primarily as the manager of Public Employment Service Offices at Crookston, Winona, Duluth, Bloomington, and Minneapolis. He volunteered in the communities in which he worked. He was President of the Crookston Area Chamber of Commerce in 1973 and President of the Rotary Club of Crookston in 1974. He served on the Board of the United Way of Greater Duluth. He was a successful volunteer fundraiser for several organizations including The United Way and the Boy Scouts and he served briefly as a volunteer District Commissioner of the Boy Scout Organization of Northwest Minnesota. Richard also served as a member of citizen advisory committees at area vocational-technical schools. Richard was especially proud that he was able to donate blood and blood products regularly over the past fifty years to others in need. Richard was very proud of his loving family, especially his children Nola and Diane. He was proud that he was allowed to contribute to his community and he was proud of his work accomplishments. Richard was a loving father and grandfather who provided guidance and support to his daughters. He enjoyed his grandchildren and they enjoyed him. Richard and Marlys enjoyed 44 years of marriage with many adventures along the way. Private interment Ft. Snelling Cemetery. Memorials preferred in lieu of flowers.
