Martin "Marty" Bakko

Bakko, Martin O. "Marty" Loving husband, father, son, brother, uncle, teammate, co-worker and friend. Born: Dec. 27, 1963. Drafted by Heaven's Eternal Ultimate Frisbee Team July 24, 2009. Preceded in death by mother, Georgia Mix Bakko and step-brother, Steve Margeson. Survived by wife of ten years, Jil; daughters, Cambria Leigh and Cara Lou; parents, Cliff and Phyllis Bakko; brother, Mark (Peg); sister, Mari (Dave) Wasilowski; step- sister, Cheryl Schill; mother-in-law, Patricia Nyhus; brother- and sister-in- law, Michael and Jean Munholand; nieces and nephews, Bridget, Tom, Sarah and Amy Bakko; Courtney and Broderick Munholand and Matt Wasilowski. After graduating from Bloomington's Kennedy High School (1982) and Mankato State University (B.S. Business, 1989), Marty earned a Masters in Business Taxation from the University of Minnesota (1996). And just to be sure there was no doubt that he truly was a master of tax, Marty aced all four parts of the CPA exam in one sitting and went on to become an adjunct professor at the University of Minnesota's Master's program. Marty's professional life took him from Pentair and KPMG to Ernst & Young and then finally as a Partner at Baker Tilly Virchow Krause. Marty spent countless summer and fall Saturdays playing Ultimate Frisbee. He was a proud member of the Tazmaniacs, Terrapins, Buddha Boys, Blue Ox, N.E. Seven (Vancouver Worlds 1997), Subzero, Cigar (World Champions 1999, St. Andrews, Scotland), Swank, Grey X, and Surly (2008 National Champions). No. 42 will play on in the hearts of his teammates and cheer them at every great pull. Knowing Marty meant hearing his eyewitness account of the fall of the Berlin Wall (at least a couple of times), appreciating his infamous "pizza car," and accepting that greens didn't belong on his dinner plate. Marty is especially remembered for his devotion to his daughters. He regaled his girls nightly with his original bedtime stories, encouraged their curiosity for school science projects and quizzed them on math problems and kindergarten sight words. He relished his role in the "dad's dance" and created a secret handshake just for them. Marty, we love you to the moon and back. We know you're out there loving us even more, and we miss you every second. Service of remembrance 1:00 p.m., Thursday, July 30, 2009, Hope Presbyterian Church, 7132 Portland Ave S., Richfield. The family will greet guests for one hour before the service.
