Marlys Joan Anderson

Marlys Joan Anderson, a beloved mother, devoted teacher, and cherished member of her community, passed away peacefully on August 19, 2024, at the age of 87. Born in Renville County, Minnesota, Marlys was the daughter of Jennings and Florence Pettis, she was raised with a strong sense of faith and family. Marlys graduated from Hector High School, where she first began to nurture her love for education and home economics. She continued her studies at the University of Wisconsin-Stout, earning a bachelor's degree in Home Economics and Education. Her passion for teaching led her to further her education at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, where she obtained a master's degree in special education. For many years, Marlys dedicated her life to teaching Home Economics and Special Education, touching the lives of countless students with her patience, kindness, and unwavering commitment to their success. She believed in the power of education to transform lives and took great pride in helping her students achieve their fullest potential. A talented seamstress and quilter, Marlys found joy in creating beautiful, handcrafted pieces that reflected her attention to detail and love for the art. Her quilts, in particular, were treasured by family and friends, often becoming heirlooms passed down through generations. Marlys also had a deep love for music and was known for her beautiful singing voice. She sang with joy and devotion, both at home and in her church, where she was an active and faithful member of the Lutheran congregation. Her faith was a cornerstone of her life, guiding her actions and bringing comfort to those around her. Marlys is preceded in death by her parents, Jennings and Florence Pettis; as well as her brother, Jerome Pettis. She is survived by her children, Lisa Strube, Mark Schneider, and Carla (Mark) Thompson; grandchildren, RJ (Ashley) Strube, Gretchen (Joe) McCarthy, Jack Schneider, Ellen Schneider, Sydney Thompson, and Danielle Thompson, great-grandchildren, Talia Strube and Beckett McCarthy; as well as many dear friends and former students who will remember her warmth, generosity, and the light she brought into their lives. She was a woman of grace, strength, and compassion, who lived her life in service to others and to her faith. Marlys Joan Anderson will be dearly missed but forever remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her. A celebration of Marlys's life will be held on Saturday, September 21, at 11 AM, at Washburn-McReavy Eden Prairie Chapel, 7625 Mitchell Rd, Eden Prairie, MN 55344. Visitation one hour prior.
