Marjorie Engebretson

Engebretson, Marjorie Evonne of Mpls, passed away peacefully on March 10, 2008 after a long and spirited battle with Parkinson's disease. Marjorie was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Norman Engebretson; sister, Agnes Clemon and brother, Gerald Norby. Marjorie is survived by sister, Lois Hammer; sons, Paul (Jan) and Peter (Laura); and four grandchildren, Anitra, Andrew, Molly and Elin. Marjorie was born in Soldier, Iowa on October 21, 1921. She was proud of her Norwegian heritage and the farm life of her childhood. She left the farm after graduating high school to study education at Waldorf College. She held many teaching posts in Iowa, eventually leaving for Jamestown, ND and the Anne Carlsen School. There she worked with special needs children, which she remembered as her most rewarding teaching role. After becoming a parish worker in Minneapolis, she met and married the Rev. Norman Engebretson in 1955. She continued to be actively involved in parish life, serving as youth director, choir director and in Christian education programs. Marjorie and Norm served congregations in Hanlontown, IA, Vallejo CA, Superior WI and Okinawa Japan. Following Norm's death in 1974, Marj returned to the Twin Cities where she was actively involved at Prince of Peace Church in Burnsville, working for several years as Education Director. Marj later joined Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church in Apple Valley, continuing an active life in ministry as well as serving on the boards of both the American Lutheran Church Women and the Luther Seminary Auxiliary. She was honored in 1990 with the Distinguished Alumni award from Waldorf College. Marjorie loved her family, her church and her friends and there will be many good stories told in the coming years over lutefisk dinners and church suppers. Memorials preferred to the Reverend & Mrs. Norman Engebretson Scholarship Fund at Luther Seminary or the Parkinson's Assn. of Minnesota. Service Friday, March 14, 11 AM at Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church, 12650 Johnny Cake Ridge Rd.
