Joy Diane Vorpahl

Joy Diane Vorpahl (Blum) passed away peacefully at her home in Coon Rapids on September 28, 2023, surrounded by her loving husband of 47 years, Gary, and her daughters Heather, Erin, Laura, and Anna. Joy was born on November 7, 1955, in Minneapolis to Myron and Sally Blum. She grew up in North Minneapolis and loved to spend time with her older sister Nancy. She graduated from Minneapolis Vocational High School in 1973. Soon after, she met Gary, the love of her life, in 1974, and they were married in 1976. They moved to Coon Rapids in 1978 and raised their family there. They had their first daughter, Heather, in 1980. Three more daughters, Erin ('83), Laura ('84) and Anna ('91), would soon follow. Their home was filled with loving and cherished memories, especially during the holidays, from listening to Christmas music on November 1 to watching It's a Wonderful Life on Christmas Eve. Many wonderful summers were spent up north at a cabin. The whole family looked forward to those fun times. Joy always made sure everyone had all they needed to make the vacation special. She always put others' needs before her own. She was the most giving woman in the world, especially to her girls. She worked hard to help support her growing family for many years at Allina Health and later at Tactile Medical. Her favorite part was when she got to work those jobs from home. She loved her daughters. They were her world. She also loved coffee stops and running errands with Gary, sweet baked treats, and collecting yarn and crochet books for future projects. She made the holidays feel extra special, whether it was through cookies, decorations, or her joyous spirit. She encapsulated her name - Joy. She was joy in every sense of the word. When you hear it, think of her and all of the joy she brought to the world. She fought courageously against the thief that is cancer. Though she may not have won the battle, those fortunate enough to have known her will always remember her legacy marked by her kindness, warmth, and a tender spirit. She is preceded in death by her parents, Myron and Sally. She is survived by her devoted husband Gary - in good health and in bad, he'll hold her hand and always take care of her. She is also survived by her loving daughters Heather (Rory), Erin (Tom), Laura, and Anna (Matt), her cat Sophie, beloved sister Nancy, and many caring friends. In lieu of memorials; please make a donation to the American Cancer Society or Animal Humane Society. For those of you who knew and loved the beautiful force of life that was Joy, we ask that you wear green in her honor. Visitation will be held Wednesday, October 4 from 4-7 PM with rememberance celebration at 6 PM at the Washburn-McReavy Coon Rapids Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial 10:30 AM Friday, Oct 6 with visitation one hour prior at Epiphany Church in Coon Rapids. Private interment.
