Florence Lenihan McHugh

McHugh, Florence Lenihan of Minneapolis and Edina, died August 22, 2014 in her home at the age of 84. Preceded in death by mother, Josephine Purdy Lenihan; father, John Lenihan; sister, Joey Lenihan; husband, John "Jack" A. McHugh and daughter, Mary McHugh Morrison. Deeply missed by sister, Mary McCarthy; children Paul McHugh (Sarah Dore McHugh), John McHugh (Eva Stipl McHugh), Peter McHugh, James "Jim" McHugh (Mary Veronica McHugh) and son-in-law George H. Morrison; grandchildren, Michael McHugh (Denisse Velez), Kate Morrison Townes (David A.), Kevin Morrison, Anne Morrison, Claire McHugh, Julia McHugh and Fatima McHugh; great-grandchildren Charlotte Townes and Henry Townes, and many nieces and nephews. Thanks to The Kenwood Residence, Right at Home Care and Allina Clinic & Hospice Care for keeping our mother safe and comfortable. Florence graduated from the Academy of Holy Angels high school, and received her undergraduate degree at the College of St. Catherine. Florence's path of spiritual self-discovery amazed all who knew her. Venturing to Oakland California at the age of 59, with the full support of husband Jack, Florence received a Master's Degree in Creation Centered Spirituality at Holy Names University in 1990. Driven by her compassion, love and spirituality, Florence shared herself generously facilitating women's spirituality groups and a women's history study project (Judy Chicago's "The Dinner Party"). She volunteered and provided support to Grandmothers for Peace, Women Against Military Madness, St. Catherine University, the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, St. Joan of Arc Church and Our Lady of Grace School. Florence shared her divine cosmic consciousness and her feminine creative energy with her friends and family though prayer, meditation, drumming, singing, dancing, photography and painting. She inspired many to pursue their own personal spiritual awakening. With a chuckle, Florence admitted she occasionally wore a headband to shock people. Memorials to St. Catherine University Scholarships or Sisters of St. Joseph Ministries. Mass of Christian Burial, 11 AM, Saturday, August 30 at Our Lady of Victory Chapel on the campus of St. Catherine University, 2004 Randolph Ave, St Paul (enter at the corner of Cleveland and Randolph).
