Ernest Echols

Echols Ernest W. Echols, age 82, of New Hope, passed away peacefully on May 2, 2004. Beloved husband of Helen; devoted father to Bill, Dan (Pat) and Patti (Matt); and adored grandfather of Chris, Nicole, Matthew, Danylle, Chad, Kate and Torin; and great-grandchildren, Drew and Cassie. Ernie was born July 3, 1921 in Columbus, Georgia. He enlisted in the U.S. Army as a young man and served his country proudly through World War II and the Korean War. The dashing soldier attracted the interest of Minnesota girl Helen Crogan, and they were married on June 9, 1944. The service life saw a series of pins added to the map as Ernie, Helen and their growing family were assigned to military posts in such far flung places as Texas, Alaska, and even Duluth. Ernie retired from the military as Major in the United States Air Force. He then brought his boundless energy with him to civilian life and took a supervisory position with Rosemount, Inc., where he worked for many years. Among Ernie's many accomplishments with Rosemount were serving as Project Manager for new plant construction in Eden Prairie, Chanhassen, Burnsville, Calgary and Germany. Ernie was active in the Zuhrah Shrine Temple and was a Past President of both the Oriental Band and Antique Car Club. He enjoyed working on his 1965 Chevy convertible as well as remodeling (and re-remodeling) the home he shared with Helen. In his later years Ernie and Helen traveled to Scandinavia, the British Isles, and San Francisco, and Ernie continued his pursuit of the noble game of golf. Ernie also fulfilled a lifelong desire to learn to play the piano and dabbled in the wonders of the internet. Ernie's memory will be cherished by his wife of almost 60 years, his children, their families, and their many friends. Visitation is Wednesday from 4:00-7:00 PM at Washburn-McReavy Edina Chapel, W. 50th St. & Hwy. 100, and also one hour before services, which are Thursday at 11:00 AM at Calvary Lutheran Church, 7520 Golden Valley Road, Golden Valley. Interment at Lakewood Cemetery. Memorials preferred to the Masonic Cancer and Blood Disorder Clinic at the University of Minnesota. "He was just such a great guy."
