Edwin "Ned" Brown

Brown, Edwin L. "Ned" passed away in Minneapolis on October 28, 2010, after a brief illness. He will be greatly missed for his gentle spirit, wonderful humor, and deep faith. Born February 25, 1922 in Northfield, Minnesota , he was the son of Chauncey Lewis Brown and Mary Louise Skogerson Brown. Through his father he was a descendent of Mary Chilton, one of the passengers on the Mayflower. After attending St. Olaf College, Brown graduated from the University of Minnesota with B.S. and D.D.S. degrees. He married Elizabeth Lee, also of Northfield, in June of 1945. After serving as a captain in the dental corps of the U.S. army in Japan from 1946 to 1948, he returned to Northfield, where he established a dental practice. In 1959, he moved to Edina, where Brown practiced dentistry at the Southdale Medical Building for over 3 decades. He was active in the American Dental Association, St. Olaf Alumni Association, and several other community organizations. In 1960, he and his wife were a part of a small group of charter members of Lutheran Church of the Master, where they were active members for more than thirty years. Ned and Elizabeth spent many happy times at their cabin on the North Shore of Lake Superior and traveled extensively, especially to Maui, their favorite island. Brown was preceded in death by Elizabeth, his beloved wife of 54 years, his siblings, Richard and Robert Brown and Ruthella "Bonnie" McDonald; his nephews Archie McDonald and Lawrence Brown, and beloved relative Frederick Glasoe. He is survived by his daughters, Susan, Nancy Johnson (Dean), Heidi Bauer (Jerry), and Melissa Brown, his grandchildren Elliott and Melisande Schendel; Mark (Kami) Johnson; Michael Johnson; Andrea (Ryan) Hollingsworth; Brent Johnson and Cristian Tomus; his great grandchildren Magnus Johnson, Gavin Jackson, and Hailey and Hayden; and his nieces and nephews Mary McDonald, Tom Brown, Judy Brown, Barb Brown, Beth Glasoe, Carolyn, Chris and Matson Bailey, Lila, Dines and Fliss Francese. Funeral will be held at Community of the Cross Lutheran Church, 10701 Bloomington Ferry Drive, Bloomington, on Friday, Nov. 5th with visitation at 10:00, service at 11:00 a.m. Memorials preferred to St. Olaf College or the donation of your choice.
