Knobloch, Dr. - William H. Age 78, of Frederic, WI Formerly of North Oaks, MN Died following complications of spine surgery on June 20, 2005. He is survived by his wife, Donna; daughters, Linda (Bob) Schoenbaum of Anaheim, CA, Judith Herrmann of White Bear Lake, and Sandra Long of Vadnais Heights; son, James of Blaine; step-son, Jeremy Irlbeck of Coon Rapids; sisters, Margery Baker of Wichita, KS and Janet Powell of Mulvane, KS; eleven grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren. His wife, Vel Knobloch and sons, Thomas and William Jr., preceded him in death. Following service in the navy during World War II as a submarine electronics technician, he attended Oklahoma State University and the University of Oklahoma School of Medicine, where he earned his medical degree in 1952. He was in private practice in Oklahoma and North Dakota until 1960. Upon completion of a residency in ophthalmology at the University of Minnesota and a year of retinal fellowship in St. Louis, he joined the faculty in the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Minnesota in 1964 as the first retinal specialist in Minnesota. He served as Director of the Vitreoretinal Service, Interim Department Chairman and Residency Program Director. He is credited with training many of the ophthalmologists currently in practice across Minnesota today. He was the author of numerous articles and made many contributions to the field of ophthalmology, especially in the area of genetics and inherited eye disease. He was a member of many medical organizations including the prestigious Retina Society and American Ophthalmological Society. He was the past president of the Minnesota Academy of Ophthalmology and received the Academy's first Outstanding Humanitarian Service Award in recognition of the charitable services he performed in Africa, China, and the local community. He also received the University of Minnesota Medical School Outstanding Teacher Award, the University of Minnesota Alumni Association Harold S. Diehl Award, and the Minnesota Academy of Ophthalmology Budd Appleton Award for service in ophthalmology. His practice in surgery and diseases of the retina continued for thirty years until his retirement in 1994. He spent his remaining years with his wife, Donna, at their lake home in Wisconsin where he pursued his love of gardening and researching and propagating mushrooms. He always looked forward to early spring when he would begin his production of maple syrup. He continued to teach residents in ophthalmology at the University of Minnesota. This caring and compassionate man will be remembered and loved by all whose lives he touched. Family will receive friends on Friday, June 24 from 4-8PM, with a Celebration of Bill's Life 7PM at WASHBURN-MCREAVY HILLSIDE CEMETERY FUNERAL CHAPEL, 2610 19th Avenue NE, Minneapolis. On Saturday, June 25, 1PM, a Memorial Service will be held at ZION LUTHERAN CHURCH OF BONE LAKE, 997 280th Avenue, Frederic, WI 54837 (Bone Lake Township). Interment will be at Fort Snelling National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to the Zion Lutheran Church building fund. Washburn-McReavy Hillside Chapel 612-781-1999.
