Hoye, Almon G. the "Friendly Principal" Died at 87. Dr. Almon G. Hoye, an innovator in the Minneapolis Public Schools for many years, died Wednesday of natural causes at age 87. He was born in Wausau, WI, on 1/30/1922. He attended the University of Minnesota, receiving his PhD. in Educational Psychology in 1967. Dr. Hoye began his teaching career at Cloquet High School in Cloquet, MN, then served in the Minneapolis Public Schools as teacher (English, Latin, Spanish and German), counselor, assistant principal, and principal at Edison High, South High, Roosevelt High, North High, Marshall High, University High, Marshall-University High, Anwatin Junior High, Jefferson Junior High, Ramsey Junior High, and Folwell Junior High. While at University High, he also served as Assistant Professor in the College of Education at the U of M. He was instrumental in effecting the merger of Marshall High and University High to form Marshall-University High. An educational innovator and strong proponent of learning second languages, Dr. Hoye developed the widely-used Ramsey Multiple Schedule and the Marshall Modular Schedule, both of which allowed greater scheduling flexibility. He also wrote numerous articles for various educational publications. Faculty and students remember his colorful daily announcements, which began, "This is your friendly principal. . ." One teacher remarked, "He was not your ordinary principal." Dr. Hoye enjoyed chatting with students in the hallways between classes, and was popular with faculty members as well. One of his pet projects was to form a men's singing quartet, along with 3 of the teachers at Ramsey Junior High, where he was assistant principal. During World War II, Dr. Hoye taught radio electronics and served in the Merchant Marines. In the early days of his teaching career, he also worked evenings as manager of Perkins Pancake House and the Boulevard Theater, and during summers was a Minneapolis Park Policeman. After his retirement, he wrote two novels, and was a member of the Second Time Around Adult Players acting troupe. He was a devout Catholic who sang in the choir and served as an usher at Visitation Church. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus (Marion Council), the Elks Club of Hopkins, and the American Legion. He loved singing, dancing, golf, bridge, and traveling. But most of all, he loved people. He had a big heart, a great sense of humor, and was an exceptional joke and story teller. Al will be greatly missed by Psyche, his loving wife of 64 years; his 8 children, Heidi Maxson (Russ) of Chandler, AZ, Elizabeth Weber (Dan) of Missoula, MT, Christopher Hoye of Minneapolis, Shelley Mitchell (Jim) of Manteca, CA, Nicholas Hoye (Pam) of Minneapolis, Geoffrey Hoye of Seattle, WA, Katherine Hoye of Hudson, WI, Jason Hoye of Minneapolis; his 16 grandchildren and 2 great- grandchildren. Al's family wishes to extend special thanks to caregivers at the Edina Care Center and Fairview Hospice. Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, June 23, at 11 a.m. at Church of the Visitation, 4530 Lyndale Ave. So., Mpls. with visitation one hour before, at 10 a.m. Burial will be private.
