David Griswold

Griswold, David J. David Jackson Griswold, born July 8, 1918; died June 12, 2006. He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia (Cappy) Casper Griswold. He is survived by his daughters, Deborah Jacobson and husband Peter, Linda Kemper and husband John, and Jan Tripp Wells and husband Burnie; grandchildren, Melissa Jacobson James and husband Mark, Derk Jacobson, Brooke Jacobson; Virginia Kemper, David Kemper; Molly Tripp; and great granddaughter, Abigail James. He is also survived by his brother, Jackson Winslow Griswold; and three nieces and their families. Dave was an architect. After Kenwood School and West and Washburn High Schools, he graduated from the School of Architecture of the Institute of Technology at the University of Minnesota in June 1941. He was recruited by the United States Naval Reserve and ordered to active duty in June of 1941. He was returned to inactive duty as a Lieutenant Commander in December of 1946. After apprentice years in other architects' offices and that of a general contractor, he opened his office to practice architecture in January 1952. He continued that practice, sometimes with partners, including his brother, until recent years when his wife became ill. Dave was active in civic affairs in downtown Minneapolis and in Edina. He was active in Colonial Church of Edina. He enjoyed memberships in The Minneapolis Club, Interlachen Country Club, Skylight Club, Gibraltar Club, and Ham & Eggs Club. Cappy and Dave were married just two months shy of 60 years. He was humbled and grateful for her support of his life for all of those years. They met on the dance floor of the Ballroom at the old Excelsior Amusement Park. The marker they share in Lakewood Cemetery has the inspiration "Come dance with me". They did! Now a song of their early years fits this time: "It only happens when I dance with you. That trip to Heaven till the dance is through. With no one else do the Heavens seem quite so near, why does it happen Dear, only with you? Two cheeks together can be so divine, but only when those cheeks are yours and mine. I've danced with dozens of others the whole night through, but the thrill that comes with spring when anything could happen, that only happens with you." Memorial service 12 Noon Friday, June 16, 2006 at Lakewood Cemetery Chapel, 36th & Hennepin Ave., Mpls. Private interment Lakewood Cemetery. Memorials preferred to the St. John's Bible, Mpls.
