D Peter Snustad

Snustad, D. Peter age 74, of New Brighton, passed away Nov. 26 2014 surrounded by family. He was a Professor Emeritus at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. He received his M.S. and Ph.D degrees from the University of California, Davis. He began his faculty career in the Department of Agronomy and Plant Genetics at Minnesota in 1965, became a charter member of the new Department of Genetics in 1966, and moved to the Department of Plant Biology in 2000. During his 43 years at Minnesota, he taught courses ranging from General Biology to Biochemical Genetics. His dedication to students and effective teaching were recognized with awards including the Morse Amoco and Stanley Dagley awards for contributions to undergraduate education. His laboratory published dozens of highly cited papers and he was widely recognized as coauthor of six editions of the influential "Principals of Genetics" which was translated into six languages. He served as Associate Chair and Chair of the Department of Plant Biology. He was elected to Fellow of the American Association for the advancement of Science. He retired in 2009. Pete was born to Ole and Vera Snustad on April 6, 1940 and was raised on a farm near Bemidji, MN. Pete was a loving and humble husband, father, step-father, grandpa and step-grandpa. Survivors include his wife Judy, sisters Irene Theis and JoAnn Johnson, son Eric (Mary), stepchildren Jon Rabbitt (Rhonda), Jeff Rabbitt (Paula), Jodi Campbell (Josh), and Jason Rabbitt (Angela), three grandchildren, and thirteen step-grandchildren. Pete took pleasure in his home and beautiful flower garden. His beloved family farm was a joy for him and he maintained a residence there along with woodland trails cleared with his trail mower and chain saw. He enjoyed sharing his farm with family and friends and ATV riding. Pete relished time in the great outdoors. He hunted on his land and took many fishing trips deep into the Canadian wilderness. Special thanks to Dr. David King and the staff at MN Oncology and also to Hospice. Memorials preferred to the family to use at their discretion.
