Brian Anderson

Anderson, Brian E. Age 65, of Mpls., passed away on March 16, 2010 after an eight-month struggle with mixed phenotype acute leukemia. Survived by his wife, Kari Shannon-Anderson; children, David and Elizabeth Anderson and their mother, Theresa Nelson; stepchildren, Jessica and Kendra Shannon; parents, Bertil and Phyllis Anderson; brother, Brad (Susan) Anderson; and sister, Barbara (Howdy) Stearns. Preceded in death by brother, Bruce Anderson. Brian graduated Phi Beta Kappa in journalism from the University of Minnesota, where he worked on the Minnesota Daily. He began his career as a reporter for the Minneapolis Tribune. He moved to Washington D.C. in the late 1960s to work as a staff writer for a U.S. Senate Subcommittee, as Assistant U.S. Senate Librarian, and as a speechwriter for Senator Walter Mondale. He returned to Minneapolis in 1970 and become editor of Mpls. Magazine (now Mpls.St.Paul Magazine) in 1977, a position he's held for the past 33 years. He was an avid Nordic skier; a proud member and former president of the American Swedish Institute; and the 2010 recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from the City and Regional Magazine Association. Brian demonstrated his love for his family with wit, quiet insight, and a gentle touch. He loved the Twin Cities and spent his career promoting its richness and diversity, while mentoring young journalists along the way. Facing his illness, Brian showed great courage and grace, openly discussing his disease and his preparation for death. His family wishes to thank the many nurses and doctors at Abbott-Northwestern Hospital, the University of Minnesota Blood and Marrow Transplant Program, and Minnesota Oncology for the excellent care given to Brian.
