Alison (Davies) Fuhr

Fuhr, Alison Davies (nee Davies) Of Edina, passed away September 28, 2009. Born on August 24, 1926 in Lincoln, NE, her father, George Kalb Davies, was the pastor of the local Presbyterian Church; her mother, Winifred Davies (nee Hendrickson), was a nurse. As a Presbyterian Minister, her father moved her mother, her sister, Mary Kay Mulder (nee Davies), and Alison many times when taking on new parsonages. Their moves included Mason City, IA (where Alison recalled weathering the Winter of '36) and Aliquippa, PA (where Alison recalled Henry Mancini as a fellow student). Her grandfather and uncle were both Presbyterian Ministers as well. She attended The Grier School in Tyrone, PA before attending Salinas Junior College (now Hartnell College) and The University of California (Berkeley) during the War, finally graduating from Tusculum College in Greeneville, Tennessee, where her father had become President after returning from a tour in the Pacific as a Navy Chaplain during World War II. After graduation, Alison held various positions, including one of which she was especially proud, on the staff of the Wall Street Journal, in New York. After New York, she moved to Washington, DC, where she worked for Kentucky Senator Earle C. Clements and Chevrolet (where she got a deal on her '58 Black Impala convertible) and later moved to AMF and Melpar, Inc., defense contractors in DC's Virginia suburbs. It was at Melpar that Alison uttered the life-altering sentence, "Bill Fuhr, you're taking me to lunch!" (They've been lunch partners for nearly 50 years since!) Her father officiated at her wedding to William Henry Fuhr on December 19, 1960 in The Newtown Square (PA) Presbyterian Church, which he had established and where he served as Pastor. Under the rules of that era, Alison had to leave Melpar when they married, and thus began her civic and volunteer work. There followed two children, Laura Leigh Fuhr and William Bryan Fuhr, born July 17, 1962 and September 3, 1963, respectively. They ultimately married Robert Jon Atol and Paula Marie Sadler. Those unions produced two granddaughters, Nicole Marissa Atol and Piper Ann Fuhr, 17 and 1, respectively, of whom Alison was especially proud. Alison brought boating to the Fuhr Family, enjoying her weekends sunning on the rear deck of the ALIBI (ALIson/BIll) on the Saint Croix. Active in Civic Affairs, she supported State, Regional, and Local efforts, including the Hiawatha Light Rail Line and Soil and Water Conservation causes. She credited the League of Women Voters for 'giving her her voice!' In her retirement from Dayton's/Marshall Fields/Macy's, she enjoyed her Family, her Church, Edynamoes, Presbytery, Minnesota Orchestra, and auto travel. Although we will all miss her terribly, we all know that she is in a better place with her mother, father, and sister, all of whom predeceased her. She is also survived by five nieces and nephews.
