Alice Lillian 'Babe' (Longen) Saleck

Saleck, Alice "Babe" Lillian (Longen) 86, of Elko New Market, passed away peacefully into the arms of our Lord on 4/19/2016 from complications due to a stroke. Preceded in death by husband Robert J. Saleck; mother and father, Catherine (Wieger) and Fredrick Longen; mother- and father-in-law, Tillie (Seifert) and Joseph Saleck. Also preceded by sisters Marilyn Leuwer, Delores Schilz, Eleanor Sagehorn and Catherine Longen; and brothers Robert, Herbert and Joseph Longen. Alice is survived by children Barbara (Lowell) Stark, Patricia (Gene) Swiridow, Michael (Kathy) Saleck, and Sandy (Allen) Piekarski; 8 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, 1 great-great grandchild; brothers Paul (Delvon), John and Anthony Longen. Alice grew up on historic Milwaukee Avenue in Minneapolis. She and her sister Delores held their first job at Western Union in the 1940s where they wore roller skates to deliver telegrams down a long hallway to the military department. After graduating from South High School, Alice worked as a seamstress at Munsingwear. Sewing became a life-long passion and talent that she shared with family and friends, creating beautiful clothing. After a whirlwind courtship, Alice and Bob married on 10/1/1949 and shortly thereafter started their family. They were inseparable for nearly 65 years. After her children were all in school, Alice joined Control Data in the 1970s where she assembled cable harnesses. She retired from the General Dynamics Division in the 1980s. Alice and Bob traveled extensively and loved to entertain: Dances at the fire barn, luaus and parties at the pool in Eagan. We believe that Bob swung by Babe's place on Tuesday, scooped her up in his chariot and escorted her to the heavens just in time to celebrate her mom's birthday in paradise. Mom, we will miss your love, laughter and ever-present smile, but take solace in knowing that you and dad are together once again. The family would like to sincerely thank the staff at HealthPartners Hospice, Augustana of Apple Valley, St. Gertrude's Rehabilitation Center and the University of Minnesota Neurology for their special and loving care of our mom.
