About Us
The Washburn-McReavy story is woven through the geographical locations of its chapels within Minneapolis and its immediate suburbs.
Washburn-McReavy was founded in 1857 in southeast Minneapolis. Our first chapel, the Washburn-McReavy Southeast Chapel, is located near the banks of the Mississippi, across the river from downtown Minneapolis. This is the area where Minneapolis began, and is near the University of Minnesota.
Near St. Anthony Village, New Brighton and Columbia Heights, in the northeast quadrant of Minneapolis, you will find our Washburn-McReavy Northeast Chapel, built in 1963. In 2000 we opened our Columbia Heights Chapel, located on Central Avenue.
Minneapolis extends north and west from both southeast and northeast Minneapolis and continues to suburbs that include Robbinsdale, Crystal and Golden Valley. Washburn-McReavy has one chapel on Lowry Avenue North in an older section of the north side of Minneapolis. It was purchased from the Swanson family in 1966 and is known as Washburn-McReavy Swanson Chapel. Our Washburn-McReavy DuSchane Chapel, located in Robbinsdale, was acquired by the purchase of Welander-Quist in 1983. In 2007 we built Glen Haven Chapel within Glen Haven Memorial Gardens this is Washburn McReavy's newest location.
Washburn-McReavy's Welander-Quist-Davies Chapel, purchased in 1983, is located in the Kenwood Hills, Loring Park, and Lake of the Isles area on Hennepin and Dupont Avenue South. Our flower shop is located at this facility. In 1997, a state of the art preparation facility was constructed at this location.
Hopkins is a suburban community west of Minneapolis. The Washburn-McReavy Strobeck-Johnson Chapel, purchased from Arthur and Ronald Johnson in 1978, is located on Mainstreet in downtown Hopkins.
Edina, which began development in the mid-thirties, is a suburb southwest of Minneapolis. The Washburn-McReavy Edina Chapel opened in 1993. An area for luncheon receptions is located in this facility.
North of Minneapolis is the Coon Rapids, Blaine, and Fridley areas extending into Anoka County. Our Washburn-McReavy Seman Chapel is located on Coon Rapids Boulevard. This Chapel was purchased in 1997 from the Seman family.
Our Washburn-McReavy Eden Prairie Chapel serves the communities of Eden Prairie, Chaska, and Chanhassen. It was built in 1998 and is located two blocks north of Highway 5 on Mitchell Road. It is the only funeral chapel in Minnesota that has a columbarium, a separate room with glass niches for cremated remains in urns. Washburn-McReavy owns and operates two crematories.
In 2001 Washburn McReavy expanded to cemeteries with the purchase of Hillside Cemetery and Chapel. Part of the natural beauty of this cemetery is the 120 acres of rolling hills covered with large oaks and maples with breathtaking views of the downtown Minneapolis skyline located at the corner of Stinson Boulevard and Hwy 88.
Nokomis Park Chapel is located near Lake Nokomis and is the closest location to FT. Snelling National Cemetery.
2005 brought more changes with the addition of three more cemeteries and chapels, Glen Haven Chapel and Memorial Gardens, Crystal Lake Cemetery and Chapel and Dawn Valley Cemetery and Chapel. Glen Haven is located in the city of Crystal; it houses a Veteran's Memorial. Crystal Lake Cemetery located at the corner of Penn and Dowling is located right in the heart of Minneapolis. Dawn Valley is nestled on Bush Lake Road in West Bloomington. The Werness Brothers Chapel is east of Dawn Valley on Old Shakopee Road and has long served the Bloomington area and surrounding communities.
William L. McReavy (Bill Sr.) and his wife, Kathleen, have four children, two of which are active in the business. In 1984, William Washburn McReavy (Bill Jr.) graduated from the University of Minnesota School of Mortuary Science and began an active role in the business. He and Bill Sr. are both licensed Funeral Directors.
